What determines how long a relationship will last? Is it the number of things you have in common? The sex? How much you talk to each other? The finances? The type of relationship advice you get from friends or read in articles like this one?
Surprisingly, the answer is none of the above. A major study done by the University of Denver has found that the primary way to determine how long an intimate relationship will last is how the couple deals with conflict. You read that right. It’s not the sex or the money or the common interests. It’s how well you deal with conflict.
Since conflict comes up in all relationships, studies have found that there are good ways and bad ways to deal with it. What do you do when conflict comes up? What does your partner do? Often, we resort to these kinds of behaviors:
I mean, if your mate, the one you perform intimate bedroom acts with, is in conflict with you, well, what can you do? It seems only natural to withdraw or give the silent treatment, for some of us. For others, we feel so emotionally charged that we attack or scream to try to get them to listen to us. And for all too many of us, our interactions can devolve to bitching and nagging and pouting around each other. After all, we are in conflict, we “just know” that that’s bad, and we feel bad about it and each other.
However, conflict is not bad, it is normal behavior between two healthy adults with lives and interests of their own. One of the first things you can do about relationship problems centering around conflict is to take a deep breath and relax. Understand that the person you’re in love with has viewpoints and priorities that aren’t always your own. You share each others lives, but you aren’t the same people. Relationship breakdowns will occur. Because of this, conflict will happen. If you don’t panic and try to dominate or run from your mate, you’ve already made a big first step.
The second thing to do is to realize that there are some healthy ways to deal with conflict. Attacking, withdrawing, bitching and nagging are not healthy. The damage the quality of the relationship. While these are our first emotional responses to argument, if you can take a breath and relax a little, you can help to avoid these automatic negative responses. So when conflict arises, see if you can learn to breath. For some of us, that might be going for a walk, or getting away from our mate til we know we won’t lash out at them. “Breathing” means take some time to calm down if you’re upset, in whatever ways make sense for you.
What are healthy ways to deal with conflict? Well, first, see if you can talk about it using statements of perspective “The way I see it is…From my viewpoint…In my opinion, we should…” Statements of perspective help your partner not to feel attacked or dominated. You are just sharing your viewpoints, rather than trying to force agreement.
Follow that up (or start with) “How do you see it…what’s your viewpoint about this…what do you think we should do?” Your mate obviously has ideas and opinions different than your own, or else you wouldn’t be fighting. If you can ask what they are and listen, you are more than halfway to resolution. If you and your partner both feel listened to (challenging during conflict, but it can be done) then you can often come to a peaceful compromise or resolution.
So, talking about your conflicts is very healthy in most cases. It can allow you both to see each other’s perspectives and then, once emotions have calmed down, you can more easily come to win/win resolution or compromise. This may seem hard to do at first, but with a little practice it gets much more natural. “Oh, darn, we’re in conflict, I guess I’m going to have to sit down and talk with my spouse about this,” can become an automatic habit.

A final note on conflict is that a lot of us wait for the other person to apologize first. Things got said, feelings got hurt, you’ve taken it personally. So of course they should apologize to us first.
